The whole of Messenia is one vast olive-growing region which stretches from the beaches of the Gulf of Messenia to the slopes of the Taygetus. In the prefecture of Messenia two types of olive are cultivated and distributed world-wide. The “Koroneiki” olive named after Koronia is a unique variety with a characteristic olive–green colour. The “Kalamon” olive is known for its crisp flesh so it is usually eaten as it is.
With the implementation of the Ordinance 1065/97, the European Union has acknowledged native olive oil from Messenia with its specific properties as being a product from a protected designation of origin (PDO).
At its second World Congress in 1995 in San Francisco, USA, the International Health Organisation concluded after many years of research that the Mediterranean cuisine has a beneficial effect on health and contributes to a longer life expectation.
For the first time, the organisation presented the Mediterranean diet “pyramid” as a role model for healthy eating. Native olive oil and olives are both a basic element of this diet.
