Olive oil and health – a source of life
The famous physicians of the ancient world such as Hippocrates and Galinos believed in the beneficial effects of olive oil. Its wonderful aroma, unique flavour and high nutritional value result from the combination of its fatty acids - 70-80% mono-saturates and 10% poly-saturates - and form a basic element in the food chain.
Paediatricians consider olive oil to be a significant factor in maintaining the body’s metabolic balance, promoting brain development and bone structure. Geriatric medicine deems it essential because of its high vitamin E content which can slow down the ageing process.
The history of the olive.
The olive reflects thousands of years of Greek history. According to mythology, the goddess Athena gave the Greeks two gifts – wisdom, and the olive tree as a source of wealth.
The olive tree is considered to be sacred and therefore to be protected. It is an emblem of peace, victory, of friendship between nations, and wisdom.
